The Night Sky
As civilization has spread throughout the world, our human impact has followed. While there are obviously many ways that our word has changed in the past century alone, a notable feature is the rise in light pollution. Most of us lookup in the evening and only see a dark haze, however the Harmony Beach Resort is nestled in the heart of an officially certified Dark Sky Park and you are able to look up to see the stars and galaxies in their true majestry.
Eons of our ancestors spent their evenings looking up, pondering the vastness of the universe and their place in it. This simple and humble inquiry has undoubtedly led not only to many insights throughout the course of human history, but also provided countless moments of reflection, serenity, and peace.
Here at Harmony Beach on Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park you will be able to connect once again with the vastness of the night sky as our ancestors did. While most people now haven’t even considered light pollution as an actual pollutant, once you get a chance to soak in the stars here up north, you will certainly appreciate the primal power that are our ancestors knew so well.
The Northern Lights – The Aurora Borealis
Solar weather is bombarding our planet constantly. The sun’s energy brings us the power necessary for life to grow, and thankfully the Earth’s magnetic field is strong enough to limit that energy so that we are not vaporized! The overall energy in the solar winds is unbelievable and ever-changing, and while easy for us to feel a portion of heat energy during the day, the night sky can bring out spectacular views of this dance of energy via the northern lights.
The Sun has an approximately 11 year cycle in which its magnetic poles flip positions north to south and south to north. At the peak of this cycle there is significant magnetic turbulence which results in an increase of sun spots and other dynamic events across the Sun’s surface. This turbulence can result in solar flares and CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections), which send energy and particles out into our system. If this aligns with the Earth’s orbit, and if the energy and particles align with our magnetic field, and if the energy levels are high enough, the resulting interaction across the atmosphere can be the beautiful visual displays of Aurora.
The forecast window for northern lights is fairly brief. It usually takes a day or two for the solar particles to reach us depending on its power, and the scientific monitoring devices which provide notifications for potential Aurora displays aren’t triggered until that energy reaches closer to Earth. While everyone wishes to see these magical displays, you do have to keep your fingers crossed.
Fortunately, here at Voyageurs National Park in the higher latitudes up north, combined with limited human activity and low light pollution, we are blessed with a pretty ideal position to get a chance to see the northern lights! Also, we have been seeing some great displays of the northern lights as 2024 through 2026 is the peak of the current solar cycle – there is definitely a chance for the Aurora to be in the cards for your next trip here at Harmony Beach!
